These specimens are stony coral also known as staghorn coral. The branching pattern of stony coral may be effective in increasing surface area and therefore increasing the number of polyps that can grow per square centimeter. These corals ae listed as Critically Endangered under the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The corals are also federally designated as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. The larger specimen measures 36 cm x 10.5 cm. The smaller specimen measures 4.5 cm x 3 cm.
