Large rectangular sample of brownish-black lava with shiny, grooved striations on one side and matte textured, hardened lava on the opposite side. The cross section of the sample shows two levels of stratigraphy: the one nearest the grooved striations is shiny black, and the second, much thicker layer is a matte dark brown with bubble holes in the lava. This sample was collected from Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, which erupted in December 2001. Pahoehoe lava is distinctive because its flows are very smooth, and consist of thousands of small flow units called toes, giving the lava a rope-like appearance. Pahoehoe flows are associated with low-effusion rate eruptions and slow flow front velocities.
