This specimen is the carapace and spine of a Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta). The carapace demonstrates that the spines of turtles are a permanent part of their outer shell, as the spine is fused to the ventral side, or inside, of the carapace. The dorsal (back) side of the carapace is dark brown in color, with light yellow horizontal bands running horizontally. The ventral (interior) side of the carapace is light cream in color. It measures approximately 14 cm x 10 cm x 4 cm in size. This specimen has been shellacked.
