This specimen is the carapace and plastron of an Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina). The carapace refers to the dorsal shell, or "back" of the turtle, while the plastron refers to the ventral shell, or "stomach," of the turtle. This specimen demonstrates how the spines of turtles are a permanent part of their carapace, or outer shell, as the spine is fused to the ventral side, or inside, of the carapace. The dorsal (back) side of the carapace is alternating brown and yellow stripes that form multiple hexagonal shapes. The ventral (interior) side of the carapace is dark brown in color. The plastron is dark in color due to shellacking of the specimen. It measures approximately 13 cm x 9 cm x 5 cm in size.
