Description

Chat with Dr. Carla Dove about her job as an ornithologist and manager of the Smithsonian’s Feather Identification Lab at the National Museum of Natural History.  Ask Carla questions about her career path and learn about the forensic tools and techniques Carla uses to identify birds that have been struck by aircraft. Learn how Carla and her team are making air flight safer while also improving management of natural populations of birds.

Prepare your students by viewing the Smithsonian Science How video archive of Carla’s Smithsonian Science How webcast, Forensic Ornithology- Bird Detective and the complementary teaching resources, Forensic Science of Bird Strikes.

Text Career Chats
These free, interactive, text-based web chats feature scientists who have previously appeared on a Smithsonian Science How live webcast. The text chats do not have a live video component. The chats take place twice each day, and allow students to have direct conversations via text with scientists about their career pathways and research at the Museum. Supplement each live chat by watching the Smithsonian Science How video of the featured scientist and using the available teaching resources before and after the chat.
