Decoding Mars

Mars rovers are sending back images of rock outcrops they encounter every day. Your challenge is to gain the skills to identify geological formations on Mars by honing your ability to recognize different formation patterns here on Earth.

Watch the video to see the patterns different geologic formations create that can be identified in rock outcrops.

Formations you'll see include:

        • Horizontal layers
        • Folded layers
        • Faulted layers

Test your pattern recognition skills!

Can you see these geologic formations in the images below?

      • Horizontal layers
      • Folded layers
      • Faulted layers

Add each image to your FIELD BOOK and label with one of the formation types

OR

Use your DATA SHEET to draw each image and label with one of the formations you've identified.

Then proceed to the NEXT STEP to check your answers.
